2014 Top Blog Posts

Happy New Year's Eve!  I thought today would be a great day to reflect on the past year by sharing my top blog posts from 2014.  It is fun to see what posts drew the most readers.  It also helps me see what my readers enjoy the most.  So without further ado, here are my top 10 posts from 2014:

1.  5 Easy Ways To Teach Your Toddler Their ABCs and 123s - The response I have received from this post has been unbelievable.  I've had a lot of people find this post through Pinterest.  I love having "learning time" at home with my kids and I hope other parents have enjoyed these simple ideas on how to teach their kids the alphabet and numbers.

2.  Spreading the Love of Reading - This post is about my participation in World Book Night.  This was a great program that I have been apart of the last three years, that through thousands of volunteers, passed out over a million and half books throughout the United States.  Sadly, given financial and time commitment from publishers, writers, givers, booksellers, printers, distributors, shippers, etc. the program will no longer be operational in 2015.  It is disappointing to see such a unique program go away that emphasized spreading the love of reading to non-readers.

3.  June Comments for a Cause - La Luz Hispana - This year I started a Comments for a Cause program on my blog and I'm happy to say that one of my posts talking about Comments for a Cause made the Top 10.  I loved how my local community rallied around supporting my Comments for a Cause effort for La Luz Hispana.  June was my biggest month for comments this year.

4.  Mommy Monday - Nuby Mommy Review: Oral Care Set - It is fun to see some of my review posts in my top read blog posts of the year.  This Oral Care Set from Nuby is actually one of my favorite products I have received from them.

5. Curious George Birthday Party - I love entertaining and I love to do things for my family, so when my kids have a birthday, let's just say I like to have fun!  This year LP chose Curious George as his birthday theme.  The birthday party was simple and fun and I'm still proud of my Curious George cake I made!

6.  Wordless Wednesday - Signs that Spring FINALLY arrived! - I think it is nice that my readers like the simplicity of a Wordless Wednesday post to make the Top 10 this year.  This post just reminds me how late and long this year's planting season was.

7.  Valentine's Day Meal Plan - Fried Pickles, Greek Steak & Greek Spaghetti, and Chocolate Melting Cake - mmm!  I could go for all of them tonight actually...  I love all the memories and feelings associated with these dishes and am happy to share the recipes for them through this blog post!

8.  Little Free Library Coming to Latimer - One of my favorite projects that I worked on this year was bringing a Little Free Library to my local community.  I love how the entire community rallied around the effort and really has made our Little Free Library space an inviting and welcoming area in downtown.  Thanks to Post Cereal for providing this opportunity to me and my local community.

9.  Family Summer Bucket List - I have enjoyed putting together bucket lists for my family over the last couple of years and sharing them on my blog.  I think my favorite thing we did this year was go on an Iowa Ice Cream Trip throughout the month of June in honor of National Dairy Month!

10.  Something Sweet in Honor of Six Sweet Years of Marriage - In January of 2014 My Farmer and I celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary, as well as being together for ten years!  In honor of our anniversary I shared my recipe for Chocolate Melting Cake - a cake we fell in love with on our honeymoon and make every year to celebrate our anniversary.

What a great mix of posts from 2014 to make my Top 10 most read posts!  Thank you all for reading along throughout the year.  What was your favorite post from this year?  Is there a post from this year's Top 10 that you missed that you're going to be sure to check out now?  What types of posts would you like to see more of in 2015?  Remember to Comment for a Cause!

Why I'll Miss Being Pregnant

This morning I am getting ready for hopefully my last doctor's appointment for our third child JP.  I'm 39.5 weeks pregnant, which is the longest I've ever gone in a pregnancy.  So much for us thinking the baby would come around Christmas...  Now we're wondering if they'll arrive before the New Year!  No matter when JP decides to grace us with his or her presence, one thing for sure is that my days of being pregnant are getting numbered.

Getting ready to go to my doctor appointment today

Call me lucky or fortunate, but I actually don't mind being pregnant and would consider myself a happy pregnant lady.  There are a few things that even make me smile about being pregnant.  So here are the top six (because I couldn't narrow it down to five) things I'll miss about being pregnant:

  1. Having an excuse to take a nap during "afternoon quiet time".
  2. Being able to pull the pregnancy card during fall harvest and being able to stay in the warm tractor when something needs to be fixed, rather than being outside helping get tools.
  3. Having people ask me "how are you feeling" or tell me "you look great".
  4. Not having to worry about sucking it in for photos.  Just let whatever baby bump you have be seen!
  5. Coming home from doctor appointments and being able to share the latest "Dr. Tanism" from my appointment.  Dr. Thoo Tan, DO, MD is the funniest OB-GYN in North Iowa and always will make you smile.  Plus I appreciate he's a realist and a minimalist.
  6. Feeling little flutters and kicks.  I love how you feel so connected to your baby after you can feel them growing inside of you.

For the Moms out there, what was your favorite thing about being pregnant?  And for everyone, when do you think JP will arrive?  Do you think we're going to have a boy or a girl?  Remember to Comment for a Cause!

Ideas for Holiday Leftovers + Recipe

Today marked the first day that we didn't have any Christmas celebrations or family members at our house for four days.  So I spent the day catching up on laundry, making Christmas thank yous and trying to get back into our normal routine.  Part of my Sunday routine is making my meal plan for the week.  After hosting two family Christmases and having family at our house for three days, needless to say, we have a full fridge of odds and ends of leftovers.  So now the big question is, what to do with all of your leftovers so you don't hear "not this again..." or have to throw any food away.  Here are three simple ideas, plus a recipe that I made tonight!

  1. Freeze - This should be a no-brainer but I think it is something people forget about.  If you have a lot of something leftover - freeze it!  I personally froze a half crock-pot's worth of chili and enough pork loin for probably a dozen sandwiches after all of our company left.  This will come in handy after baby #3 JP arrives this winter!
  2. Add-ins - Leftover vegetables and meat make for easy and quick additions to eggs for breakfast or inside quesadillas or paninis for dinner.  Today at noon I used leftover cheese from a cheese platter and leftover cubed ham from an appetizer to make some delicious panini melts.  They were perfect and something light to have after eating big meals for the last few days.
  3. Repurpose - Lastly, repurpose your leftovers into something new.  There are lots of ideas for repurposing your holiday ham or turkey into casseroles or soups, but don't forget those side dishes.  Tonight I used our leftover mashed potatoes to make a delicious and simple Shepherd's Pie.  I hope you enjoy it just as much as my family did!

Leftover Shepherd's Pie Recipe

Leftover Shepherd's Pie
2 cups leftover mashed potatoes  (Or you make make fresh if you don't have any leftovers - I personally love the Pioneer Woman's mashed potatoes recipe.)
1 lb. ground pork or beef
2 Tbsp. flour
2 Tbsp. ketchup
1 cup beef broth
4 cups leftover mixed vegetables (Or you can use a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, thawed.)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional
Salt and pepper, to taste

Brown meat in skillet.  Stir in flour and cook for one minute.  Stir in ketchup, followed by beef broth and then vegetables.  Feel free to add a little salt and pepper to taste.  Spoon into casserole dish or 9x9 square baking dish.  Cover with mashed potatoes.  And if you have cheese loving kids like I do, sprinkle cheddar cheese over the top.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes.

Holiday Check List - Christmas Week!

It is the Eve before Christmas Eve and I am feeling pretty good, thanks impart to me making my Holiday Check Lists this year, so I've been able to stay on top of things that need to get done for Christmas.  I still have a couple things to do before I turn in for the night but I am pretty much ready for our upcoming full three days of time with family.  Here is my check list for this week, Christmas week:

  • Kitchen Schedule (If you are like us, you have Christmas celebrations with different family members each day.  Make sure you layout a schedule for your kitchen so you can be sure to have everything done in time.  Also, be sure to breakout your holiday dishes and serving platters!)
  • Clean House (If you are hosting a Christmas get together remember to do things such as setting out towels, bedding, etc. for overnight guests and making sure you have enough hangers in your coat closet for all those extra coats!  If you aren't hosting a Christmas celebration, be sure to still walk through and pick up your house, as a lot of people seem to stop by during the holidays.)
  • Celebrate Traditions and Make Memories (Don't forget the reason for the season and to make sure you have everything you need to incorporate new and old traditions into your Christmas celebrations.)

Hopefully you all have a blessed and stress-free Christmas week!  What are you looking forward to the most this week?  Remember to Comment for a Cause!

#NorthIowaBloggers Help Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank this Holiday Season

In November, the North Iowa Bloggers teamed together to gather donations and food to help two local food banks, the Franklin County Food Pantry in Hampton and the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank in Mason City.  And luckily for me I was able to join a few other North Iowa Bloggers a week and a half ago to drop off those donations.

Beth Ann from It's Just Life, Donna from DonnaHup.com, myself,
Jeni from Jeni Eats and Amy from Modern Rural Living dropping off our donation
Thanks to your comments on my blog and several others, as well as actual food donations, we were able to donate 235 pounds of food off at the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank in Mason City!

After we got everything finalized with our donation, Ozzie Ohl, volunteer at the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank, gave us a tour of the new facility and demonstrated how it operated.  The Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank is volunteer ran and currently has around 125 volunteers, making it the largest volunteer ran food bank served by the Food Bank of Iowa.  Ozzie's focus at the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank is to help tell the facility's story to the general public and to help with special events and campaigns in the community.  In the three short years since he started being a volunteer he has worked in the order filling room, gone on food pickups and assisted people at the counter.

Ozzie Ohl demonstrating how the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank
works for North Iowa families
The Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank is an emergency food bank, so families can visit the facility once a month, where they will receive the equivalent of a four day ration.  In the picture above you can see Ozzie talking about some of the different food areas.  Above each section is a chart that tells how many items a family with different amount of members can receive.  For example, in the non-edible section that Ozzie is currently pointing to a family of one receives three non-edible items, family of two receives four, family of three receives five items, etc.

Volunteers stocking fresh produce at Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank
Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank collects food through donations and purchases food and non-essentials through monetary donations.  Currently over 80% of the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank goes toward food acquisition, while the rest goes towards building costs.  The majority of the food they purchase from the Food Bank of Iowa since they are able to buy it for 14 cents a pound.  They also buy food and non-perishable items from local grocery stores.  Hy-Vee East donates their day old bread and baked good to the food bank, and they partner with Community Kitchen bi-weekly receiving collections from Target and Wal-Mart through their partnership with Feeding America.  In the end, Ozzie told us that the food bank simply couldn't exist without the generosity of North Iowans.  In 2013, Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank served 17,580 people.  At the end of November this year, the total was 19,533 and officials expect to serve at least 1,500 in December, creating a record year in the number of people served.

Holiday Check List - 1 Week Before Christmas

1 week before Christmas!  Can you believe it?  Are you ready?  I do have to admit, that my mind has been busy lately because besides thinking through everything Christmas, I am also thinking everything baby, as we only have a week or two till our third child JP arrives!  I'm happy I've been making my Holiday Check Lists this year so I've been able to stay on top of things that need to get done for Christmas.  Here is my check list for this week, one week before Christmas:

  • Wrap Gifts (I don't want My Farmer finding himself on Christmas Eve having to figure out who gets what gift and having to wrap them if I find myself in the hospital with a new baby so I need to get my wrapping done.  Hopefully the last of my gifts will arrive in the mail or via UPS this week!)
  • Christmas Letter (Did you hear how today was the busiest mail day for the Postal Service?  Were you part of that craziness?  You need to get your cards out soon if you want them to arrive before Christmas.)
  • Buy Groceries (Just like at Thanksgiving, I try to avoid the grocery store if possible the week of Christmas.  By simply buying your groceries at the end of this week, you'll save yourself a lot of headache and crowds.)
  • Christmas Baking (This is a great week to look at all of your Christmas sweets you've stocked over the last couple of weeks and start thawing them so you are ready to make cookie platters for your Christmas parties.  If you are still needing some Christmas cookies, check out my Iowa Christmas Cookie Exchange for 16 goodie recipes, including my family's favorite - Peanut Butter Balls.)
  • Christmas Traditions (Don't forget the reason for the season and to make sure you have everything you need to incorporate new and old traditions into your Christmas celebrations.  I think LP asks everyday if it is Jesus's birthday because he is excited to have a party for Him and have our family over to celebrate at our house!)

Holiday Check List - 2 Weeks Before Christmas

How did it already become two weeks before Christmas?!?  I'm happy I've been making my Holiday Check Lists this year so I've been able to stay on top of things that need to get done for Christmas, but will have to admit between being gone at a conference last week and then having the flu hit our house I have fallen slightly behind...  I guess that is why it is good to make check lists so you can still feel okay and not stressed out if things take you out of the loop for a few days!  Here is my check list for this week, two weeks before Christmas:

  • Finish Shopping  (I still need to order a couple things online so I'll get that done tonight!  Plus, I just need to review my gift list and make sure I have everything taken care of.  If you are still looking for some Christmas gift ideas, check out my family's picks for this year here.)
  • Wrap Gifts (I don't want My Farmer finding himself on Christmas Eve having to figure out who gets what gift and having to wrap them if I find myself in the hospital with a new baby so I need to get my wrapping done now.)
  • Trim Your Home (If you haven't finished decorating your home for Christmas yet this is the week to get it done.  We still have a box in our basement which probably means I should just make it a garage sale box instead of putting the decorations in that box out... This is a perfect time to sort out your decorations too!)
  • Christmas Letter (Finish writing and printing your Christmas letter and cards this week.  Also, address your envelopes so you can get them in the mail as soon as your have all of your components done.  One of our Christmas traditions is to take our Christmas photo in the same spot with a fresh coat of snow on the ground - we're waiting for the fresh December coat of snow...)
  • Finalize Christmas Menu (Whether your hosting or traveling to other's for Christmas, this is a good week to finalize your menu.  What are some Christmas dinner traditions for your family?)
  • Buy Non-Perishables  (Talking about that Christmas Menu, this is the perfect week to start buying your non-perishable grocery items.  Many of them start going on sale this week, plus it will help ease your future grocery lists.)
  • Christmas Baking (Keep making all of your favorite Christmas sweets and then freezing some of each batch back that way you will have a variety to choose from to make cookie platters close to Christmas.  Check out my Iowa Christmas Cookie Exchange for 16 goodie recipes, including my family's favorite - Peanut Butter Balls.)

Holiday Check List - 3 Weeks Before Christmas

The holiday season is full of fun, laughter, and good times with family and friends.  And if you let it, the holiday season can be full of stress too.  I have always been a planner, and I like to think that my family and friends appreciate that.  It seems even more important to stay on top of my holiday check lists this year since we're expecting our third child (JP) anytime around the end of December.  So, without further ado, here is my check list for this week, three weeks before Christmas:

  • Finish Shopping  (I'm planning on finishing all of my Christmas shopping this week between online and locally, after getting a large majority done on Black Friday.  Did you take advantage of any Cyber Monday deals today?  If you are still looking for some Christmas gift ideas, check out my family's picks for this year here.)
  • Wrap Gifts (This is an area I usually fall behind on but this year I'm planning on getting my wrapping done as I get my presents bought.  I don't want My Farmer finding himself on Christmas Eve having to figure out who gets what gift and having to wrap them if I find myself in the hospital with a new baby...)
  • Christmas Tree (If you haven't gotten your Christmas tree yet, now is a perfect time to get your tree so you can enjoy it for a few weeks.  If you do have your tree, crank up the Christmas tunes, chill the egg nog and decorate your tree.  We went and got our Christmas tree this past Saturday and decorated it on the first day of Advent.)
  • Trim Your Home (Don't forget about decorating the rest of your house beyond the tree!  I'm planning on hanging our stockings and decorating throughout the house this week.)
  • Christmas Letter (If you write a Christmas letter start writing and get it printed this week.  I'm planning on getting this done mid-week this week and then hopefully getting them printed by the end of the week.)
  • Christmas Cards (Be sure the select your Christmas cards if you haven't already (I always get ours in early November when Hallmark has a buy one get one free special).  If you are creating a card online be sure to choose your design and order your cards this week.)
  • Christmas Card Recipient List (Review and finalize your Christmas card list.  You can also start addressing your envelopes so you can get your cards out as soon as possible.  It always feels good to have your Christmas cards in the mail!)
  • Christmas Photo (If you haven't selected a photo yet, you better take one fast.  We are actually planning on waiting for the next snow fall to take ours so we have a fresh layer of snow on the ground - it is one of our family traditions.)
  • Plan Christmas Menu (Whether your hosting or traveling to other's for Christmas, start planning your menu.  What are some Christmas dinner traditions for your family?)

Comments for a Cause - Dance Marathon

It is December 1st which means it is time to talk about Comments for a Cause!  First thing to cover is my donation to the #NorthIowaBloggers Food Drive for the month of November.  Thank you for the 26 comments posted during the month, which results in a $13 donation.  I had a lot of fun with the #CanHunger Challenge earlier this month and look forward to delivering our food and monetary donations this Friday with my fellow #NorthIowaBloggers.  Thank you to everyone that is helping hungry families this holiday season.

In the month of December I am excited to be helping families with children with life threatening illness through the Dance Marathon fundraiser at Iowa State.  One of my readers, Courtney, reached out to me about this cause and I'm happy to help by donating $0.50 for every comment during the month towards Dance Marathon.

Let's hear more from Courtney on Dance Marathon:

This month’s Comments for a Cause truly shows the power of networking through 4-H. I first met Val when she was the President of my 4-H Club when I joined 4-H in fourth grade. Since then, I have continued to follow her blog on Facebook and Pinterest. That is when I first found out about her Comments for a Cause she does on her blog. I approached Val about doing Comments for a Cause for Dance Marathon, an organization near and dear to my heart since I started school at Iowa State, and she graciously agreed.

Dance Marathon is neither a dance nor a marathon; it is a celebration of life. (It’s also a fundraiser.) Dance Marathon is the largest student-run philanthropy on Iowa State’s campus, helping children with life threatening illnesses for 18 years, giving financial and emotional support to hundreds of families across Iowa. All money raised through the event is given directly to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital through the Children’s Miracle Network. This year’s Dance Marathon at Iowa State is January 23rd and 24th.

I first got involved with Dance Marathon my freshman year in college, participating as a dancer. I fell in love with the organization and have been a member of the Families Committee for the last three years. As a member of the Families Committee, I get assigned a family and serve as their contact. I have been partnered with the Graber family since they first joined Dance Marathon three years ago. This is a picture of me with the Graber family at last year’s Dance Marathon.

The Grabers are a member of Dance Marathon because they have a Miracle Kiddo named Gabe. To be “eligible” for Dance Marathon, a family has to have received care from a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. In Iowa, that is the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Gabe is an energetic 4th grade boy who loves to read books, tell jokes, and cheer on the Cyclones. Before he was born, he was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome. Gabe’s right ventricle never fully developed, so he only has 1 pumping chamber in his heart. This defect is corrected with a series of 3 open heart surgeries—one at birth, one at 6 months old & one between 2-5 years old. Gabe had surgery at 6 months old and 2 ½ years old. He recovered well except for a stroke paralyzing his left side. He has fully recovered from the stroke but has weekly physical and occupational therapy due to significant delay in his fine motor skills with his left hand and foot. He sees a cardiologist once a year.

Some services that Iowa State Dance Marathon has helped fund at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital include:
  • Library materials (If you ever are at the hospital, you will notice the library is painted teal, Iowa State Dance Marathon’s color, to honor our donation.)
  • Patient support “comfort kits”–parking and food vouchers for family members during extended stays
  • Music therapy equipment
  • Infant CPR training kits
  • Surgery teaching model
  • Diversion tools
  • Zaky positioning tool in NICU–a parental simulation tool to stimulate development in premature infants
  • Video laryngoscope for PICU
  • MRI vision distraction tools
  • Continual improvement in recreational therapy

Above is a map that shows the patients Dance Marathon programs across Iowa support.

Thanks to the generous support so far, Iowa State Dance Marathon has made a 1 MILLION DOLLAR pledge toward the brand new, state-of-the-art Children’s Hospital opening in 2016 in Iowa City. This picture below shows the hospital when I visited one year ago. Click here to see the progress that has been made!

At ISU, our big event happens in January.  At this event, our participants (dancers) stay on their feet for FIFTEEN hours to symbolize our support for the families who spend countless hours in hospital waiting rooms.  But it’s not a punishment for us; it’s a party.  We listen to music, play games, hang out with the kids we help, and even do a bit of dancing. Watch last year’s Thank You Video to get a better visual for what the big event is like!

Dance Marathon is for the kids, and at Iowa State, that’s always our focus.  We build up to our big day all year long by raising money for the kiddos at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.  After a dancer raises $250, they get to come to the party in January.  In 2014, we raised over $427,000.00 together, for the kids.

As a member of the Families Committee, we host families at various events throughout the year. Some examples of events include a “Teal Gate” before an Iowa State football game as well as attending the football game, a Families Appreciation Dinner, the VEISHEA parade, and Make-A-Miracles.

Some Make-A-Miracles, similar to Make-A-Wish, I have help organize these past three years:

  • Matthew was the puck and stick boy at an Iowa State Hockey Game.
  • Gabe had a Captain Underpants party and Dav Pilkey sent him autographed copies of his Captain Underpants series!
  • Cy surprised Will for his 4th birthday party!

If you would like to make a personal donation, feel free to donate here to help make miracles happen.  For more information about Iowa State’s Dance Marathon, check out their website.

Christmas Cookie Exchange - 16 Iowa Cookie Recipes

One of my favorite things about the Christmas season is baking and indulging in Christmas Cookies!  I love making Christmas cookie plates as gifts and to bring to Christmas parties, so I start making, freezing and storing Christmas goodies now!  The key to a good Christmas cookie plate in my opinion is to have a diversity of goodies, so I like to make a couple different varieties weekly.  I asked some of my fellow Iowa bloggers what some of their favorite Christmas cookies are and am happy to share them as part of this Christmas Cookie Exchange!

Cookies from Left to Right, Top Row to Bottom Row:

Got your oven on preheat now?  Which one of these recipes are you excited to make?  Remember to Comment for a Cause!  Also, a special thanks to all of my fellow Iowa bloggers that helped contribute to my Iowa Christmas Cookie Exchange!

Christmas Goodie Must - Peanut Butter Balls

Black Friday means several things to me:
  • First - I get most of my shopping done (and without kids)!
  • Second - I start playing Christmas carols in the car and in the house.
  • And Third - I start stocking up on Christmas goodies!
I love making Christmas cookie plates as gifts and to bring to Christmas parties, so I start making, freezing and storing Christmas goodies today.  Each week I try to make a couple different varieties of goodies so I have a diversity of goodies for my cookie plates (and so I have enough to make it till the end of Christmas).  One Christmas goodie that it seems inevitable that I end up making a few batches of is my family's favorite - Peanut Butter Balls (affectionately known as Christmas Crack to My Farmer!)

Peanut Butter Balls
18 oz jar Creamy Peanut Butter (Many brands have decreased their jar size over the last few years so if you can't find an 18oz jar you'll be fine, but you might want to add an extra scoop of peanut butter to your recipe.  If you live in Iowa, I personally know that Fareway still sells their generic brand at an 18 oz size.)
2 cups Powdered Sugar
4 Tbsp Butter, soften
5 cups Rice Krispies cereal
Chocolate Almond Bark, melted

Combine first four ingredients.  The mixture should be able to stick and stay together, and at the same time not leave peanut butter all over your hands.  Roll mixture into balls about the size of a quarter.  Dip balls into melted almond bark.  (If your almond bark is really thick, add a tablespoon of shortening to the almond bark to thin it out slightly but not changing the flavor.)  Refrigerate or keep in cold storage.

***Chef's Note*** I like to use a spoon to help cover each peanut butter ball in almond bark and then spoon the ball onto a fork to drain off excess chocolate before letting it set on a cookie sheet with parchment paper on it.

What is your family's favorite Christmas goodie?  Remember to Comment for a Cause!

Also, be sure to check out my blog this weekend for a Christmas Cookie Exchange round-up post!

Christmas Gifts for the Entire Family

I can't believe it is already Thanksgiving Eve!  One of the items on my Holiday Check List for this week is to complete my Christmas gift lists.  This includes not only finalizing my family's wish list, but also deciding what gifts we will be giving others.  I know I always appreciate some extra ideas to help with Christmas gifts so I figured I'd share some ideas from my family.

The Rural Outdoors Dad (aka My Farmer)

Electric Smoker:  If you don't have an electric smoker you need to get this on your list this year!  This is the perfect gift for the guy in your life (that you also can use!)  You can use your smoker all year long and have a lot of fun experimenting with different types of meats, rubs, marinades, etc.  Most sporting good stores have sections dedicated to smokers and outdoor cooking.

Yellow Work Gloves:  What guy that works outside doesn't need some new work gloves?  For My Farmer his go-to pair of work gloves are the classic yellow work gloves.  These are very affordable and you can buy them in large packages, so you always have a pair available!  An added plus for those that wash clothes in your home, they can be easily thrown in the wash with your other chore clothes.  These would also make a great stocking stuffer!

Ammunition Box:  If you have a hunter or a trap shooter on your list like my husband, then they need an ammo box.  Ammo boxes come in a variety of sizes and help your gunman's (or gunwoman's) ammunition stay organized, dry and safe.  Many boxes are stackable as well so you can sort your ammunition into different boxes for your different firearms.

The Mom Who Likes To Keep Busy (aka Me)

Magazine Subscription:  I will be the first to admit that I stay pretty busy - but what Mom doesn't!  I know this upcoming year I'm going to appreciate when I get a magazine in the mail to just sit and relax with.  (With soon to be 3 kids ages 3 and under I'm going to deserve a little "me" time.)  So whether you're into cooking, home decor or would just like some more ideas of things to do with your kids, there is a magazine for you.  This year I'm asking for a subscription to Family Fun.  They always have a lot of great ideas!

Kitchen Gadgets and Tools:  One thing I have on my wish list every year are at least a couple different new kitchen gadgets and tools.  Sometimes they are brand new items I've always wanted but have never purchased for myself, while others are replacements for ones that I've had since college...  I love to cook and bake and this year I'm hoping someone gives me some new silicone baking mats, pot handle grips, a bouncy whisk and a pie bird.

Learn A New Language Program:  Maybe for some of you it is too early to start thinking about New Year's Goals, but for me, I know I'd really like to learn how to speak Spanish.  So on my list this year I'm hoping someone will help me with that goal by giving me a Spanish language learning program.

The Imaginative Hands-On 3 Year Old Boy (aka LP)

Walkie Talkies:  On our farm we use two-way radios and our son loves using them, so we're going to give him his own pair this Christmas.  What a fun toy for boys and girls to use with their siblings and friends!  I remember having some when I was a kid and my sisters and I loved playing with them.  I can't wait to see how LP enjoys his!

Building Toys:  Whether it is Legos, Lincoln Logs or simply blocks of different sizes and shapes, kids love building things and LP is no different.  This year while making wish lists we saw some really neat building sets that use bolts and screws, to magnetic colored shapes, to gears.  There are so many fun sets available that will help your preschooler use their imagination.

Hot Wheels Car Maker Playset:  LP loves anything with wheels and he loves to make crafts.  So why not combine those loves and get him a Hot Wheels Car Maker!  He gets to pick out the car type, color and decals.  This should be a lot of fun to make and play with!

The Happy Go Lucky 18 Month Old Girl (aka MP)

Melissa and Doug Learning Sets:  Who doesn't Love Melissa and Doug products?  One thing I've looked into for MP this Christmas is some of their learning sets.  They have learning sets from food, to occupations.  Most of these sets are wooden, and some are available in felt too.  There are so many neat ideas they have - the hard part will be choosing exactly which one to buy!

Books and CDs - We personally give our kids one piece of clothing, one toy and one book (3 gifts to represent the 3 gifts Jesus received) for Christmas gifts.  Reading is so important to us so we are always looking for new books for our kids.  We also like to get our kids a new CD in their stocking every year too.  This year our library has gotten us hooked on Laurie Berkner!  If you have any preschoolers and under on your shopping list this year you'll have to check out her catchy songs like "We are the Dinosaurs", "These are my Glasses" and "I Know a Chicken".

"Little Helper" tools - MP loves to imitate her big brother, her dad and me, so why not get her some "pint-size" tools to help her do so.  You can find fun kids sized brooms, vacuums, aprons, tool sets, etc. to help your little one help you - whatever the task may be!  Plus, since MP will soon be a big sister, I'm sure she'll want to be a big helper even more than she does now!

What are some ideas on your wish list?  What gifts are you excited to give this year?  Remember to Comment for a Cause!  And be sure to check out even more ideas by looking at my list from last year.
