Celebrating National Ag Day with a Farm Kid Q&A

National Ag Day is a time to recognize and celebrate the vast world of agriculture. As a 5th generation farm family, we live and breathe agriculture every day, and I thought it would be fun to get my kids’ perspectives on what farm life means to them. So, I sat down and asked them questions about growing up on the farm. Their answers were simple, honest and a reminder of why we love this way of life.

Celebrating National Ag Day with a Farm Kid Q&A
My kids helping this past fall during harvest
K (13), R (8), L (9) and A (11)

What’s your favorite thing about growing up on a farm?

R – It’s fun!
L – We have a big yard, and it’s fun to play in.
A – A big yard to run around in.
K – Getting to help with the pigs.

There’s nothing quite like the freedom of farm life — wide-open spaces, fresh air and plenty of room to explore.

What’s your favorite crop or animal on the farm?

R – Our dog Sunny, because she’s cute and protects the farm.
L – Corn and sweet corn.
A – Corn and sweet corn.
K – Pigs, because they’re fun when they’re little.

From the crops we grow to the animals we care for, farming teaches responsibility and appreciation for the food on our tables.

How do you think farming helps the world?

R – It gives the world food, animals, and milk.
L – It gives us food, meat, and crops.
A – It gives us nutrients and food.
K – It gives us food.

It’s amazing to see how even at a young age, they understand the impact of agriculture. Farmers work hard every day to provide for their families and communities while feeding people far beyond our farm’s borders.

What’s your favorite chore to do on the farm? And your least favorite?

R – Favorite: Helping in the fields and riding in the tractor. Least favorite: Taking care of the goats’ water.
L – Favorite: Feeding the dog and barn cats. Least favorite: Getting the goats fresh water.
A – Favorite: Feeding the goats. Least favorite: Moving the goats to their outside pen — especially if the bus is coming and we're in a rush!
K – Favorite: Helping sort weaned pigs when they arrive at the farm. Least favorite: Grinding pig feed.

Like any job, farming has its fun moments and its tough tasks. But even the least favorite chores teach responsibility and the importance of caring for the land and animals.

If you could teach someone about farming, what would you show them first?

R – The big equipment.
L – The gigantic fields.
A – Our pig barns.
K – How to drive a tractor.

Each of these answers highlights an important part of farm life — hard work, dedication, and a love for what we do.

Celebrating National Ag Day with a Farm Kid Q&A

As a farm family, we take pride in raising the next generation with these values. I love seeing our kids learn, grow, and develop their own passions for agriculture. Farming is more than a job; it’s a legacy — one that we’re proud to pass on. Happy National Ag Day!

Be sure to check out the last time I interviewed my kids for National Ag Day back in 2021! It’s fun to see which answers have stayed the same and how much they’ve grown in their knowledge and experiences of the farm.

  30. The journey of seeking is rarely linear. Sisters may support each other wholeheartedly, or they may collide in frustration and rivalry. But even conflict can illuminate paths otherwise unseen. Through disagreements, misunderstandings, or moments of jealousy, each sister learns not only about the other but about herself. She discovers resilience, patience, and empathy. She learns which truths are hers to claim and which she must release. In this way, the sister-seeker becomes both anchor and compass—anchored in the bonds of family and community, yet guided by the call of curiosity and self-discovery.

Unlike mainstream fashion, which emphasizes symmetry, decoration, and conventional beauty, Comme des Garçons thrives on experimentation and disruption. Clothes are intentionally oversized, shapes are unconventional, and silhouettes frequently appear abstract or sculptural. This approach challenges the wearer to think about clothing not merely as a utilitarian necessity but as a medium for self-expression and intellectual engagement. Kawakubo once famously stated, “I design clothes to create a space for people to think.”
