The 4th of July is the perfect time to celebrate our country’s independence, show off some patriotism, spend time with family and friends, watch fireworks — and, of course, check crops.
It’s been a tradition for decades for farmers to head out to the fields this time of year to see if their corn is “Knee High by the 4th of July.” While that old benchmark doesn’t really apply anymore thanks to improved hybrids and genetics (we like to see our corn head high by now), it’s still a fun tradition for our family to measure both our corn’s growth — and our kids’ growth — each summer.
In fact, we’ve been snapping an annual “Knee High” family photo for over a decade now (2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012). It’s one of our favorite ways to look back and see just how much things have grown and changed.
Our crops have been progressing nicely after getting everything planted in such a timely manner this spring. It’s amazing how much they’ve grown just in the past week with the heat and those much-needed rains. While taking our annual photo, we even spotted a few tassels starting to pop up!
We hope you have a blessed Independence Day! What are some of your favorite 4th of July traditions?
