Comments for a Cause - Room to Read

It is a new month and time for a new cause to support.  But before I get into the details for February, I'd first like to talk about last month.  During the month of January I had 44 comments, creating a donation of $22 for the Battle of the Badges, that supports Make-A-Wish Iowa.  If you'd like to see how the event went check out my friend Donna's (from DonnaHup.com) review of it.

In the month of February I am teaming up with my friend Beth Ann from It's Just Life to support Room to Read.  Beth Ann and I both have a love of reading and February is Library Lover's Month, so we had to celebrate through a cause that supported childhood literacy.  So for every comment made during the month I'll be donating $0.50 to Room to Read.

Room to Read is a great organization that promotes childhood literacy worldwide.  They also work hard on gender equality in education.  There is an estimated 773.5 million people worldwide that lack the ability to read and write, and out of all those illiterate people, two-thirds are female, and over 90% live in developing countries.  This is where Room to Read comes in to help.

Room to Read is located in 10 countries in Asia and Africa.  They have programs that focus of girls' education, building schools, starting and filling school libraries, reading & writing instruction, etc.  A neat fact is that there have been over 9.7 million books checked out from Room to Read libraries.

Another thing that makes this organization an A+ in my book is that over the last 8 years they have had a Charity Navigator rating of 4 stars.  This means the organization is spending the majority of their dollars on their cause and not on overhead and management costs.

So get involved and comment all month long to help this great organization making a difference in the lives of over 8.8 million children so far, with goals of surpassing 10 million children this year!  How are you going to celebrate Library Lovers Month?  One way Beth Ann and I are celebrating is by helping Room to Read's Library Initiative through Comments for a Cause!

Wednesday = Library Day

What is your favorite day of the week?  Well, for LP it would have to be Wednesday, also known around our house as Library Day.

I grew up going to my hometown's library and participating in "Story Time" as a child, and I have continued the tradition with my children.  I started taking LP to the library when he was just a couple of months old and MP's first trip to the library was at age Day 6.  We are so lucky to have such a great library just 15 miles away.  If you live in North Iowa or travel through, I encourage you all to visit the Hampton Public Library.  This Carnegie Library offers a wide variety of services for all ages, including these fun and unique things: book clubs, public computers (including a bilingual AWE computer), interlibrary exchange program (they'll borrow a book, movie, etc. from another library for you if they don't have it), eBooks, youth drama club and LP's favorite - children's "Story Time" (which is held on Tuesday nights and Wednesday mornings).

Do you have a library card?  Do you participate in programs at your local library?  If not, I encourage you all to sign up for a library card and see what your local library all offers.  If you have children, I especially hope you check out your local library's children's programming.

Library Fun Fact:  In a recent study of which states
have the highest attendance at children's programming,
Iowa was among the top five.
#1 Wyoming, #2 Vermont, #3 Iowa, #4 Idaho, and #5 Indiana.

Story Time is an opportunity for my kids to read books, sing songs, make crafts, make friends, etc.  It also gives me a time to build relationships with other parents with children close to my children's ages.  If you are from the Franklin County, Iowa area, be sure to check out Story Time, it starts up October 1st and 2nd.

To conclude today, if you're looking for some books to read, here are MP, LP and my top picks from this summer:

LP's Top Pick: Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site
MP's Top Pick:  Counting Kisses
My Top Pick:  The Duck Commander Family
Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site, by Sherri Duskey Rinker
This is a fun book for all truck lovers and that is why LP recommends it!  The story goes through the construction site by showing several types of equipment trucks.  One by one, each piece of equipment goes to rest so they can be ready for the next day.  This book is a great bedtime story to help your busy toddler go to sleep.

Counting Kisses, by Karen Katz
MP recommends this book because she loves how LP, My Farmer and I count and kiss our way through it.  Each number highlights a different area of the body to kiss.  This is a great book for babies and siblings to do together, and is overall a great way for your kids to relax and unwind before bedtime.

The Duck Commander Family, by Willie & Korie Robertson
Calling all Duck Dynasty fans!  If you enjoy watching Duck Dynasty you'll love learning more about the Robertson family.  This book goes through the family's struggles and successes, all while showcasing the family's humor and faith.  Also, it includes some family favorite recipes!  If you haven't watched Duck Dynasty before I encourage you to sit down to this easy read.  I guarantee you'll be intrigued about this family after the reading book and will become a fan before you know it.

Gotta go - we're off to the library!

How is it July 26th? Summer Bucket List Update!

Has anyone else's month of July been flying by like mine?  Actually, lets be real, anyone else's summer been going by way too fast?  To tell you the truth, summer is not my favorite season of the year - in fact, it might be my least favorite season, but I have been having a blast this summer!  (And I think it has shown in my blogging because I haven't been very consistent with blogs lately...)

I may have not been doing very well blogging lately, but I do think we have been doing a pretty good job checking off things on our Family Summer Fun Bucket List!  We still have quite a bit to do but I think we'll be able to get most of the things done within the next couple of months.  Here is how we currently stand on our Summer Bucket List:
  1. Go to the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines (and invite my Grandma S/LP's Great-Grandma to come along)
  2. Ride the Train at the Boone Scenic Valley Road (and invite my Grandpa & Grandma K/LP's Great-Grandparents to come along)
  3. Go to the County Fair
  4. Go to the State Fair
  5. Visit a New Midwest Town/Landmark
  6. Go Camping at Pine Lake with Friends
  7. Go on a Family Vacation
  8. Sign-up for the Summer Reading Program at our Local Library
  9. Participate in the Latimer Fun Day 5K Run/2 Mile Walk
  10. Go Swimming at the Swimming Pool
  11. Go Golfing
  12. Go on a Nature Walk at Beeds Lake
  13. Have a Picnic at Clear Lake's Beach
  14. Watch Fireworks for the 4th of July
  15. Have Family Dates (Mom & Dad, Mom & LP, Mom & MP, Dad & LP, Dad & MP)
Go to the County Fair
The Franklin County Fair was last week and we went to the fair a couple different times.  Some of our favorite things were going through the 4-H Building, riding the train, going to the rodeo and eating great fair food!  Here are a couple photos from our adventures at the fair:

MP and LP enjoyed the train ride (even if the photo doesn't really show it...)

Sign up for the Summer Reading Program
We not only signed up for the Summer Reading Program at our local library but we also completed the program last week.  One of LP's favorite places to go is the library.  I hope he continues his love for reading as he grows older.

the summer reading program
Participate in the Latimer Fun Day 5K Run/2 Mile Walk
Last year I participated in my first 5K ever and so this summer I wanted to do another, but this time walk it, since I just gave birth at the end of May.  So I packed up the kids in the stroller and we participated in our local town's celebration's Fun Run/Walk.

Getting ready to participate in the Fun Run/Walk with LP and MP in the stroller
Go Swimming at the Swimming Pool
Well, I'm kind of cheating on this one...  My idea was to go to our local swimming pool (which I still want to do) but the kids and I did go swimming in a hotel while traveling to one of my cousin's graduation party.

MP and I getting into the pool
LP, MP and I all had a great time swimming
Have a Picnic at Clear Lake
One day after running errands in the area, LP, MP and I had a picnic at Clear Lake and then went to the splash pad at City Beach afterwards.  We had so much fun!  I plan on continuing to do this after future errands trips!

LP enjoyed watching the boats while we had our picnic at Clear Lake
And LP really enjoyed playing in the splash pad
Good thing I brought extra clothes because
LP was soaked when we left!
The Ice Cream Truck also made a stop at City Beach while we were there!
So LP picked out a treat before we headed home.
LP enjoyed his ice cream sandwich so much I think I only got
two or three bites of it...
Watch Fireworks for the 4th of July
We had a great time celebrating Independence Day with some of My Farmer's and my good friends from college and their families.

The kids getting ready for the Dads to shoot the fireworks!
Go to a Baseball Game
Ok, so it wasn't on the original list but it was so much fun I'm adding it (and then crossing it off because I find joy in crossing off things on lists).  Our family went to an I-Cubs Baseball Game earlier this week thanks to Pfister Seeds.  It was a lot of fun and a perfect night for a baseball game.

We've been having a great summer so far and we can't wait to continue working on our Summer Bucket List.  What is your favorite thing you've done this summer so far?

Wordless Wednesday - Santa Visits

My Farmer and I thought visiting Santa might not go the best this year - LP is at the stage that it takes him awhile to warm up to people.  So we decided to try to visit Santa when he came to the library, because one of LP's favorite places to go is the library:

LP visiting Santa at the Library
As you can see he wasn't the biggest fan when we wanted him to sit on his lap.  So we figured we'd try one more time when Santa was at our local fire station.  LP actually knows Santa, so we thought it might go a little better:

It did go a little better...  It must be the red suit!  We figure these pictures will be priceless someday!

Summer Reading Reviews

This summer LP and I participated in our local library's summer reading program and since it is now September, I decided it'd be a good time to share our favorite books of the summer!

LP's Favorite Read - Bed Hogs by Kelly DiPucchio

This cute book is a story about a little pig from Sooey, South Dakota who is just trying get some sleep but the rest of his family (snoring Papa, dancing Mama, smelly feet sister "Miss USDA" Rose, drooling sister Flo, and giggling big brother blue-ribbon Ed) are being bed hogs.  As Little Runt says himself, "I'm squished!  I'm squashed!  I'm buried in this heap!  You're hoggin' up my space in bed.  I'll never get to sleep!"  Besides the cute story, there are beautiful illustrations to go with.  This is a fun bed time read for kids age toddler through early elementary school.

My Favorite Read - Sacred Acre by Mark Tabb with the Ed Thomas family

This is a book about the life and legacy of Ed Thomas, a football coach and teacher from Parkersburg, Iowa.  Ed Thomas is known by many as a great football coach, but after reading this book, you'll think of him as a great husband, father, christian, mentor and leader.  This book gives you a closer look at Ed's courage after an F-5 tornado struck the town he lived, taught and coached in, as well as the power of faith, love and forgiveness after Ed was murdered by a former football player just a little over a year after the tornado.  It also lets you see how he lived and passed on his motto of "Faith. Family. Football."  I recommend this book for anyone who likes biographies, likes football, likes small-town life or who likes inspirational books.

Sacred Acre made it to the top of the stack on my bedside table this summer
If you've never heard of Ed Thomas, here is a video that ESPN made when Ed Thomas's family received the 2010 ESPY Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.  I highly recommend you watch it:
