5 Reasons I'm Grateful to be Farming

Today is National Farmers Day and I went back and worth on what to do, what to say and how to celebrate, but last night as my Farmer and I laid in bed, tired of talking about the harvest that really has never gotten going, I made him think of five things he's grateful for, to appreciate the little things and the big things in his life.  So this morning I figured what better way to celebrate National Farmers Day than by writing down why I'm thankful to be farming.

5 Reasons I'm Grateful to be Farming
  1. Work with family:  The first reason I'm grateful to be farming is that I get to farm and work with my family.  Not only do our kids get to be apart of the everyday operations, it is also special to see three generations working together.  Yes working with family can be challenging at times, but in the end, if it wasn't for our family we wouldn't be able to accomplish what we do every year.
  2. Thankful we started farming when we did:  Farming can be cyclical in a way.  There are ups in the farming economy and there are downs.  There can be great weather, and then not ideal weather conditions.  There can be times of innovation and growth, and then times of survival and endurance.  When my Farmer and I graduated college and began our farming career things were going great in agriculture.  There were a lot of opportunities and we are thankful we were able to take advantage of those.  Today, things are the most stressful they have ever been during our career, so we are thankful for our start, to help carry us through times like these.
  3. Network of friends and fellow farmers across the nation:  We have been blessed with some awesome opportunities to network with farmers in our local area, state and across the nation over the years.  Having this group of friends that understand what we're talking about and that we can learn and grow from at the same time is pretty amazing.
  4. Get to drive tractors:  You have to take time to be grateful for the little things too and for me that is being able to drive tractors.  I grew up on a farm and I will always remember that my parents told me I had to wait til I was 10 years old before I could drive a tractor.  Luckily for me, my birthday is at the end of October so when my 10th birthday rolled around, guess what, I had my first tractor driving lesson!  There is just something about driving a big, powerful, tractor, even if I may only be going 3.5 mph through a field.  It is something I've always enjoyed ever since that fist time when I was 10!
  5. CommunityMy community has been very welcoming to me from the start and I love the pride everyone has for our town, county and area.  I am also thankful that I live in a community that is so supportive of agriculture - from pig and grain farms like mine, to farmers that bring in their vegetable crops to the local Farmers Market.  My community sees that it takes all kinds, types and sizes to make our area an encouraging and appreciative place to work in agriculture.  I'm proud of where we live, where we farm and where we are raising our family.

So there you have it, just a little insight into what makes life as a farmer so special to me.  Thank you to everyone that allows my family and others to put food on your tables and fuel in your vehicles all year long.  This is my dream job and I'm so grateful to be doing it with my family by my side.  What questions do you have about farming?  Remember to Comment for a Cause!
